IntroductionTwenty years have gone by since I graduated from university and began my explorations as anarchitect. Now,by compiling the collection of works in this book,I have attempted to give aninclusive overview of the trial and error and experimentation of these last two decades. The concepts I explored at first, guided only by faint inklings and presentiments, graduallycame to bear relation to actually completed projects, and evolyed, split off,or merged ina variety of ways, giving rise to new ideas. In recent years there have been more overseasprojects, and as a result the primal, core ideas I keep in mind are subjected to unexpectedstimuli in the form of different climates, cultures, histories and environments. These havebegun producing surprising mutations and ever-increasing diversity. That is why this look back over the past 20 years seems like both a motley collection of alldifferent sorts of endeavors,or a consistent pursuit of one single direction. It is in fact both, and I believe the marriage of these two brings about an architecture that blends simplicity andcomplexity, the primordial and the futuristic. This book presents 107 projects over 20 years,in chronological order. These are not necessarilywell-known projects, and some of them are shown here for the first time, including conceptualmodels I have never presented and competition proposals that were not selected.I hopethat by appearing alongside many other projects, each one is contextualized in a way it couldnot be when simply described on its own,and the evolution and deepening of concepts, theturning points and fusions will become visiblebelieye it will become evident that beneatheven the boldest, most daring proposals lie many years of patient trial and error. The indexes on black bands attached to each project description contain numbers of otherprojects that seem to bear a relation to that project, and are intended to function like links. They enable the reader to get a different angle on the body of work by tracing it not onlychronologically but also as a web of interrelated concepts.Twenty years as an architect represents a milestone, but also a new beginning. As this bookshows,in recent years there have been more projects and they are growing more diverse, the range of concepts and ideas expanding dramatically. While rooted in architecture's fundamental and primordial values, these projects entail new and unexpected ideas andforms, and I hope that they will sow seeds for the future and some of them will serve in somesmall way to forge the value systems of tomorrow. These value systems will in turn generatethe future of the future,in ways we can scarcely imagine.Below I list some of the fundamental concepts that underlie all of these projects. When readas words alone, they may at first glance be as cryptic as Zen koans, but when the collectionof works based on these concepts is viewed,I believe the issues explored in them will take onmore tangible form.In the future, where will we live, how, and in what kind of society?Whatis the nature of the relationships between bodies and spaces, interior and exterior, natureand artifice, the individual and the group? As we explore these questions,we come to havepremonitions and visions of the future of architecture itself.理甄Z.ZC.ET
